im trying to keep this as basic as ever. but seriously i need the answer to this question to continue my paper for anthropology. I've read and heard that the main reason why the U.S. and U.N. placed economic sanctions on Iraq is because of Iraq's invasion of Kuwait, however why does this matter to us or to the U.N.? Who cares if Iraq wants to invade Kuwait over petty reasons? why should we punish Iraq for them wanting to invade Kuwait? meh, a part of me feels like making this thread is epic fail but im trying it anyway lol. An answer would make everything so worth while..considering i cant find the answer anywhere and i don't wanna wait until i have class tomorrow and im hoping one of you has something that can possibly help, jus post a good answer plz? |

From -[link]- The Iraq sanctions were a near-total financial and trade embargo imposed by the United Nations Security Council against the nation of Iraq. They began August 6, 1990, four days after Iraq's invasion of Kuwait [1], and continued until May 22, 2003, after the fall of the Saddam Hussein government in the US-led invasion earlier that year. Their stated purpose was at first to compel Iraq's military to withdraw from Kuwait and after that to compel them to pay reparations, and to disclose and eliminate any weapons of mass destruction, and to do certain other things. Banning financial resources and all trade except for the import of medicine and in some circumstances food,[1] the Iraq sanctions were perhaps the toughest, most comprehensive sanctions in history, and have caused much controversy over the increased child-and-infant mortality, poverty, and suffering inflicted on the Iraqi people, marked by two senior UN representatives in Iraq resigning in protest.[2][3] Initially the U.N. Security Council had adopted Resolution 661, a resolution that imposed stringent economic sanctions on Iraq, providing for a full trade embargo, excluding medical supplies, food and other items of humanitarian necessity, these to be determined by the Security Council sanctions committee. After the end of the 1991 Gulf War, those sanctions were extended and elaborated on, including linkage to removal of weapons of mass destruction (WMD), by Resolution 687.[4][5] It's fun to read. It is important to understand some of the other conflicts in the area prior to Iraq's invasion of Kuwait. During the war between Iraq and Iran, the US was accused of helping out Saddam ( picture of Rumsfeld shaking hands with Saddam). -[link]- So when the opportunity came to defend a small nation against invasion by Saddam we took it and were happier than shit to prove to Iran that we were not in cahoots with Iraq. In addition to this, it was in our best interests that Iraq not gain greater access to the Persian Gulf for reasons of containment and economic stability. Should Kuwait fall into the hands of Iraq, then the military containment of his forces would become more difficult and the capacity of the country to profit from oil would be increased due to greater port access to the Persian Gulfs sea trade opportunity. Ultimately our involvement in Kuwait came down to, 1 It would look good to the world 2 we stood to profit or minimize economic loss 3 and our new weapons' capabilities needed testing In addition to these reasons, Saddam used biological weapons against Iran and he was seen as an evil dictator. An unprovoked invasion into Kuwait supported this view. After WW2, where everyone kind of turned a blind eye to Hitler's invasion of Poland, the US learned a lesson about staying out of conflicts and appeasing dictators. Sometimes you have to get all up in the kool-aid even when you don't know the flavor, because all kool-aid stains when someone starts spilling it. So, why did we place sanctions on Iraq? We didn't have the balls to destroy him with everyone watching. So by placing harsh sanctions on Iraq and decreasing the quality of life of Iraqis we had hoped to decrease Saddam's popularity so that it would be easier to remove him later. Whether this was from revolution within, or as we saw be true, regime change from outside. I hope my views are of benefit |

Maddy, if I recall correctly, a while ago you said that you're a big fan of stand-up comedy. Check out Robert Newman's "History of Oil" where he "examines the history of the last 100 years or so but putting oil center-stage. Brilliant!" He's one crafty Brit. ![]() -[link]- Edited Fri Dec 12 2008, 04:19AM |
